I’d rather face brain-eating creatures than be here.
However, my determination wavered when it came to my fifteen-year-old niece, Quinn—my kryptonite. I held her close, shielding her from the emotional turmoil. Though nearly the same height, I made an effort not to acknowledge Tristan, her uncle, on the other side. Once upon a time, I believed he was magical too. But that was a long time ago. Thirteen years, to be exact—thirteen years of pretending he didn’t exist, a charade becoming increasingly challenging in the small town.
The pastor, who hardly knew Jonathon, continued his eulogy. I stifled the urge to mutter “Liar” under my breath, feeling Quinn’s tears dampen my shoulder. They were a testament to her pain and loss. If I could, I would bear her pain, shielding her from the harsh reality. It was probably a good thing I had only recently discovered Jonathon’s secrets while he lay on his deathbed, battling liver cancer. If I had known earlier about his infidelity and self-destructive habits, there might have been a different story to tell.
Jonathon, Stella’s husband, was not the saint everyone believed him to be. This newfound knowledge led me to wear pink instead of the customary black to this occasion. My mourning was reserved for Quinny, as I affectionately called her. I couldn’t bear to see her in pain. If only I could have shouldered her suffering.
A flood of memories washed over me, transporting me back to my teenage years. Back then, I had been called Calista the Crusader by my mother, a fitting superhero name, considering my penchant for fighting injustice. Standing up for my friend Javier against the merciless football players led to some rather creative acts of retaliation. Those were simpler times, but now, as Dr. Calista Monroe, seeking justice had acquired a new set of rules and limitations.
Ending thoughts:
Becoming a doctor had been a form of revenge, a way to prove all the naysayers wrong. I had defied their expectations, defying the odds of what a troublemaker like me could achieve. The rebel in me resurfaced today, evident in my pink elf costume—a silent declaration of my refusal to be controlled. A rebel without a cause, perhaps, but today, it felt right.
