This is an amazing suspense, thriller mystery that has a lot of entertainment and also some sad scenes.  “William Kent Krueger” is the author of this beautiful novel; he is the New York Times bestselling author of This Tender Land, Ordinary Grace, and many more. The author wrote this story with wonderful images throughout the novel and the reader felt that they are there and feeling the breeze on their faces or smelling the river. This is the story of the Drum family who lives in New Bremen, Minnesota. This is a shepherd family who lives in a small town. The children include 16-year-old Ariel preparing to start school at Julliard, 13-year-old Frank, and Jake, the youngest son.

It begins with the death of one of Frank’s schoolmates, Bobby. Bobby was hit by a train and his death is suspicious because it looks like he sat there and waited for the train to hit him. and after Bobby’s death, Frank and Jake found another dead man not far from where Bobby was killed. As if this wasn’t tragedy enough in this small town, in the end, there is another death that personally devastates the Drum family. It is unknown if the deaths are related or not and roughly the second half of the story is dedicated to solving this mystery.

The story keeps the reader busy with Frank and Jake’s antics that ended up placing them in precarious positions and involving them knee-deep in active investigations. Frank’s father Nathan is a preacher, he handles every situation no matter how serious it is in life and how he gains strength from their faith in God. The characters in the story are well developed and have unique personalities that are recognizable. From past loves to current loves to lost loves, each person in the book handles each situation differently. Some closed down, some got angry, and some just collapsed from loss and fear. From start to finish, the reader will want to continue this journey, no matter how heartbreaking it may be.
